We are pleased to confirm that the 2021 event will be on 15 August. Entries are now closed. There will be no on the day entries.

All 2020 entries have been automatically deferred to the corresponding 2021 distance.

The Burnham Beeches Half Marathon and 10k offers a choice of two distances, both on a mix of closed roads and hard surfaced woodland paths through the cool shade of the Burnham Beeches ancient woodland in South Bucks. It’s the perfect setting for a summer half marathon or 10k.

2021 is the 40th running of this iconic event, and to celebrate it we are running it backwards! We aren’t asking you to actually run backwards, but you are welcome to give it a try! It’s the course which is being reversed, which means the long hill climb near the end of each lap of the half is a descent near the start of each lap.

The half marathon starts at 09.15, the 10k at 09.30.

In keeping with the 40th celebrations we have a fantastic medal for all finishers (note that this year there will not be a finisher shirt).

There will be water on the course from paper cups and in the race village there will be water taps available. We are trying to reduce our use of plastic so we ask that as many people as possible please bring their own reusable water bottles or wear a hydration vest.

We will need to see how the Covid-19 situation is closer to the event what practical measures we need to put in place. One of the aspects that has had to be changed already is that we won’t be able to make use of the school swimming pool this year.

Subject to Covid-19 rules in place at the time, families and supporters are welcome at the start and finish in the school grounds but note there are no dogs allowed at the school.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three places overall – and the top place in each of the veteran categories (V40/V50/V60/V70) – for both females and males. in both the 10k and Half Marathon.

A pre race email will be sent to entrants a week or so before the event. Please note that headphones (other than bone conducting ones) are strictly not allowed as although roads are closed we can not guarantee the route will be traffic free and it is important you can hear traffic plus marshal instructions.

We hope to have hot food available to buy in the race village, provided by our friends at The Crown pub. There is no alcohol allowed in the school field but the pub is on Crown Lane a short walk away from the finish.

Parking will be provided in line with recent years, with early entrants given a space at the school a short walk from the start and general parking about a 20 minute walk away.

Keep an eye on our Facebook page for latest information.

We will monitor the Covid-19 situation as we prepare for the event. We are very conscious that we need the support of our local partners to be able to organise this run and we will be in regular contact with them during the months before the event.

We look forward to welcoming you on 15th August.

ROUTE OF THE HALF MARATHON

Burnham Half Marathon Route

The Half Marathon is a two lap route which starts and finishes at Caldicott School, Farnham Common. The 10k route is a single lap. Both routes are clearly marked and will be well marshalled.

RUNNER’S WORLD REVIEWS – THANKS FOR THE GREAT FEEDBACK!

“I have previously taken part in the Half Marathon at Burnham Beeches. This was my first time at running the 10Kms – great – would definitely do it again. Challenging (who put those hills in the way !!!) but very enjoyable, friendly event. :-)”

“My first ever big organised event and I really enjoyed it! Usually run on my own or with one or two work colleagues, so it was a real buzz to set off with hundreds of other runners. Lovely course through the woods, plenty of shade – ideal for August – a few gentle hills but nothing too challenging, very well organised and marshalled. Loads of encouragement to keep you going! If I ever step from 10k to HM I’d like to do it here.”

“Excellent race, beautiful scenery, great organisation. Will definitely do it again.”

“Scenic 2 lap course (one lap for the 10k), lots of excellent marshalls and spectators, plenty of shade and water stops to see off the summer heat. Mostly on road with some easy trail paths… first lap is full of lovely undulating hills, which feel like steep mountains by the second lap! Some brilliant bonuses, like a swimming pool at the end, and your name on the race shirt.”

ABOUT BURNHAM JOGGERS AND THE HALF MARATHON

The first Burnham Beeches Half Marathon was an off-road affair on the Portman Estate, over a course that included various obstacles including stiles! It was held on the 9th September 1980 and the winner was Graham Patton of Massey Ferguson in a time of 1:12:53. 1st female runner was Jill Standerwick of Porton Camp AC in 1:32:22. 346 runners competed. It is believed that the course may have been a bit short!

The following year the race HQ moved to Caldicot School, with a course through and around Burnham Beeches. Although there have been at least two course changes over the years, the modern event follows the same, successful, formula but now has a measurement certificate!

Burnham Joggers AC was one of the early wave of running clubs that became popular in the 1970s. The club meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at Huntswood Golf Club, Burnham, heading out for runs in and around the village of Burnham. In the summer we are privileged to have access to the National Trust owned grounds of the Cliveden Estate and, of course, the beautiful, traffic-free, lanes of Burnham Beeches.

In addition the Half Marathon, the club hosts the Cliveden Cross Country just after Christmas and a private 5k event for local clubs in the spring, also at Caldicott School. Profits generated from these events are donated to local charities chosen by members. Each year some £5-10,000 are given to good causes by the club.

Twice a year the club hosts a beginners course. From zero to 5k in 8 weeks is the promise. Lead by members who are qualified running coaches, many graduates from this course go on to become members and make running a regular part of their lives.
